An ELISA kit is only as good as its fit to your sample and target. Two kits for the same analyte can differ enormously in sensitivity, specificity and validated sample types. Before you commit, work through the criteria below — they are the same ones our technical team checks when matching a kit to an enquiry.
1. Understand the ELISA format
Sandwich ELISA uses two antibodies for high specificity and is the standard for proteins and cytokines. Indirect ELISA is common for antibody and serology work. Competitive ELISA suits small molecules and haptens that can’t bind two antibodies at once. Match the format to your analyte type before comparing brands.
2. Confirm analyte, species and reactivity
Check the kit is validated for your exact analyte and species — a human IL-6 kit may not reliably detect mouse IL-6. Cross-reactivity data tells you what else the antibodies bind. If you work across species, look for documented reactivity rather than assuming it.
3. Match the sample type and matrix
Serum, plasma, cell-culture supernatant, urine and tissue lysate behave differently. A kit validated for serum may need dilution or a different protocol for lysate. Confirm your matrix is listed, and note the required sample volume — low-volume assays matter when samples are precious.
Always check the validated sample types and the minimum sample volume before buying. A kit that needs 100 µL of serum is a problem if you only have 20 µL of precious sample.
4. Compare sensitivity and detection range
The detection range and lower limit of detection (LLOD) must bracket the concentrations you expect. If your target is present at very low levels, prioritise a high-sensitivity kit. If your samples span a wide range, a broad dynamic range saves re-runs and dilutions.
5. Read the validation data
Reputable kits publish intra- and inter-assay CV (aim for <10–15%), spike-recovery and linearity of dilution. These numbers predict how reproducible your results will be. A kit with no validation data is a risk, however attractive the price.
6. Check contents, throughput and regulatory status
Confirm whether the plate is pre-coated, how many wells you get, and whether standards and buffers are included. Match the 96- or 384-well format to your throughput. Finally, check the regulatory status — most research kits are labelled Research Use Only (RUO) and are not for diagnostic use.

Many components are stable if resealed and stored per the insert, but pre-coated plates and standards are the most sensitive. Follow the kit’s storage instructions and note the opened-stability window.
